Rapid expansion of wireless video services

With the development of video services, users are increasingly demanding video transmission rates, and users are not satisfied with the fixed-line high-speed viewing experience. Instead, they hope to enjoy high-quality audio and video at any time on mobile terminals. Moreover, in recent years, the evolution of mobile video services in terms of resolution has developed rapidly, and correspondingly higher requirements have been put on mobile network rates.
In video playback buffering rate, 1080P needs to be increased about 5 times compared to traditional 480P, 4K business needs to be increased by more than 20 times; and for VR without loss of resolution, the demand for panoramic 3D video entry level bandwidth will reach 840Mbit/s. These demands have brought great challenges to the speed and capacity of wireless communication networks.
Gigabit LTE achieves smooth upgrade from 4G to 5G
The arrival of 5G can meet the user's demand for mobile broadband, but before the commercial use of the 5G scale, the traditional LTE network cannot support the Gigabit transmission rate. On the eve of 5G arrival, Gigabit LTE came into being. Its basic technology consists of carrier aggregation, 4?4 MIMO, and 256QAM total 3 core technologies. In a good wireless environment, 4 streams can increase the spectrum efficiency by a factor of 2, 256QAM can increase the spectrum efficiency by 33%, and carrier aggregation can increase the user download rate by the aggregated carrier bandwidth.
It is reported that Huawei and British operator EE use the newly released Huawei Mate10 Pro commercial terminal in the 4T4R network, and the measured peak rate is as high as 970 Mbit/s. In addition, it can be seen that the Gigabit LTE network can achieve gigabit rate transmission by testing the test results of operators and major manufacturers, and can meet the needs of users.
Gigabit LTE enters industry outbreak
Based on the speed and capacity advantages of Gigabit LTE, domestic and foreign operators and major manufacturers have tested and deployed Gigabit LTE. According to GSA statistics, as of the beginning of October this year, 213 operators worldwide have deployed carrier aggregation technology commercially. A total of 28 operators have commercially deployed carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO, and 256QAM 3 Gigabit LTE core technologies. As many as 40 operators are conducting Gigabit LTE experiments and planning their commercial deployments.
In China, the three major operators have started the experimental and commercial deployment of Gigabit LTE. China Mobile has piloted or commercially deployed 4x4 MIMO in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Xi'an, Chengdu, and other cities; China Telecom also cooperated with Huawei, Qualcomm and other leading manufacturers to implement three-carrier aggregation, 256QAM, and 4x4 MIMO. Experiments; China Unicom, as a challenger in the 4G market, is more active in deploying Gigabit LTE, has conducted gigabit LTE trials in 50 cities across the country, and launched commercial services for Gigabit LTE in Hainan and other markets, and its peak rate can be Up to 975Mbit/s.
In the aspect of assisting the global operators in improving their network capabilities, equipment manufacturers have been making active efforts. In this regard, Huawei has a lot of practice. As of July 2017, Huawei has deployed 68 4T4R commercial networks throughout the world. In overseas cooperation, Huawei cooperated with Thai operator True to take the lead in deploying the 4.5G 4T4R network. After the 4.5G 4T4R network is deployed, network performance, especially cell edge performance, has been significantly improved, and the downlink throughput rate has increased by nearly 40%, which greatly compensates for the problem of insufficient coverage of high-frequency LTE.
ZTE Corporation continues to promote the deployment of Gigabit LTE networks. Based on the Pre5G Giga+MBB solution provided by ZTE, China Unicom deployed Gigabit network to support its joint efforts with the film and television industry to release new movies, providing high-end users and VR panoramic broadcasts with a guaranteed rate.
In April of this year, Ericsson and Guangdong Unicom joined hands to launch the world’s first 1Gbit/s live network transmission test and demonstration based on the dual-band wireless point system. Ericsson also assisted Hainan Unicom to deploy a Gigabit LTE network along the high-speed rail around the island.
Terminal manufacturers also started to embrace Gigabit LTE, such as Huawei Mate10 Pro, Samsung S8, Samsung note 8, HTC U11, LG V30, Sharp Aquos, Sony XZ Premium, Google Pixel 2, etc. Several phones have already supported Gigabit LTE. There will be more low-end phones supporting Gigabit LTE.
Therefore, under the vigorous promotion of domestic and foreign operators, equipment manufacturers, and terminal manufacturers, Gigabit LTE entered the industrial outbreak period, providing users with a viewing experience of enjoying high-definition video anywhere, anytime.
